Action Alert: Climate change and the border wall
Rather than being despondent about the state of environmental policy at the national level, come out for action at the local level on Tuesday, June 6, 2017. You can make a difference.
With abdication of climate change action at the national level, the local level is where progress can and is taking place. Come out for action on climate change in a situation where you can make a real difference. Come to the Pima County Board of Supervisors meeting 9:00 am Tuesday, June 6, 130 W. Congress Street, 1st Floor, Board of Supervisors Hearing Room. See the details below (item 1)
Also come out against the border wall. It is bad for wildlife in our region. Both the County Board of Supervisors and Tucson Mayor and City Council have resolutions before them against the border wall. The Tucson City Council meeting is 5:30 pm on Tuesday, June 6, Mayor and Council Chambers, City Hall, 255 W. Alameda St. See the details as item 2 below.
1. Global Warming. The President has declared that he is pulling the USA out of the Paris climate accords, and has taken various actions to undermine or cancel previous US policies to limit global warming. This is bad for the whole world, not just for the Tucson Mountains, but right here we have already experienced one century of warming weather, and lately it is getting worse, threatening the livability of our region with severe temperatures, severe drought, water shortages, and severe storms. By pulling out of the Paris accords, the President undermines action everywhere because it sends the signal that the country that has contributed most to the problem will not get behind fixing it. But President Trump cannot stop action in the USA to limit climate change, and we can still send a signal to the world that despite what the President says, the USA is working to do its part. Various states have strong climate change policies, most notably California and New York. Pima County is discussing joining these efforts. If enough states, cities and counties in the USA take action, climate change can be limited, and benefits in new energy technologies, and the jobs they provide, will be ours. The majority of the people in the USA want strong action on climate change. Your chance to have a big effect on this issue is here and now. This is the chance to ignite a grassroots movement supported by local government. Come to the Pima County Board of Supervisors meeting Tuesday June 6, 9 am. Be seen, be counted, and make your voice heard. Urge the County to adopt a resolution on limiting global warming and urge the Board to join the Western Climate Initiative. These ideas have come from some of the supervisors themselves. Come and support them to get majority votes for strong action on climate change. It is in addendum 2 to the agenda, and item 11 for the BOS meeting.

It is well worth the read.
When you come to the meeting, fill out a speaker card saying that you are in favor of the resolution. It would be great if you can speak too (you would get three minutes), but just showing up and supporting others is important.
2. Border Wall. The border wall proposed by President Trump would be very environmentally destructive. From the beginning of life in North America, wildlife has regularly moved between Mexico and Arizona, and much wildlife depends on this ability. Indeed, the life in the Tucson Mountains is only as rich as it is because its connected to a much larger area. Not only would the border wall be an impenetrable barrier for many species, its construction would cause much environmental damage. Also the Border wall would not work as intended, and would have an exorbitant cost. For details, read the County’s proposed resolution at the following link:

Come to the Board of Supervisors meeting to support this resolution. It is item 10 on the agenda for June 6.
A similar resolution is also being considered by the Tucson Mayor and City Council. You can see the proposed resolution at the following link.

The City Council Meeting is 5:30 pm on Tuesday, and is Item 9 on the agenda. You can support the County’s resolutions in the morning and come back and support the City’s resolution in the evening.
When you come to the meeting, fill out a speaker card saying that you are in favor of the resolution. It would be great if you can speak too (you would get three minutes), but just showing up and supporting others is important.
Thank you for your support.
