December 27, 2006 Hon. Gabrielle Giffords United States House of Representatives 502 Cannon House Office Building Washington, DC 20515-0308 RE: SAGUARO NATIONAL PARK EXPANSION Dear Representative Giffords, We were pleased to read in the Daily Star that you expressed your support for moving forward with the Saguaro National Park Expansion. However, unless you take swift action, we will all suffer a permanent and unnecessary loss. We need you to re-introduce legislation that was proposed by your predecessor Jim Kolbe together with Hon. Representative Raul Grijalva, to purchase several parcels of land to expand the Saguaro National Park. Land is available to expand both the east and the west sections of this National Park that borders Tucson. Our two Congressional Representatives had co-sponsored House Resolution 5898 in July, 2006. But before any action could be taken, Mr. Kolbe resigned, and the Bill was lost in the shuffle. Here is why it is critical for you to act immediately. On the west side, there are 300 very desirable acres in private hands, the owners of which have agreed to make it available for expansion of the Park. One parcel constitutes more than half the available land: a single parcel of 160 acres. It has been placed "on the market" and will be sold, possibly to a developer who could place 40 or more houses right at the boundary of Saguaro National Park, unless you take action now. Please re-introduce this House Bill before the land is otherwise sold. We urge you to make this one of your first official acts. It is a wonderful opportunity for you to display the stewardship that the Sonoran Desert so desperately needs. Please help us to achieve this goal. Thank you for your time and attention, and your anticipated prompt action to preserve this irreplaceable land. Very truly yours, Tucson Mountains Association By _________________________ Debbie Hicks, Its President
